Hakuna matata!
HAYDEN — Even though "The Lion King" first came out years before Christian Center School's students were born, they're loving the opportunity to perform this timeless classic for live audiences this weekend.
For senior Shay DePasquale, who plays Nala, it's a show she's always known and loved.
"This story can relate to audiences in 2022 because Simba, the main character in the show, has a life full of confusion and loss," Shay said. "He tries to forget about his past and numb his own hurt, but at the end of the story all he is searching for is his father. I think our generation can relate to this because there are so many hurt and confused people looking for a savior. Everyone, through their pain and loss, is ultimately looking for their father, whether they know it or not."
Christian Center School will present "Lion King Jr." at 2 and 7 p.m. today and Saturday. It's an epic adventure of curious lion cub Simba as he struggles to accept loss, the responsibilities of adulthood and his destiny as king. The show features classic songs from the 1994 animated film such as “Hakuna Matata” and the Academy Award-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” as well as songs written for the Broadway production.
Sophomore Colton Smith plays the older version of Simba. He said he finally mustered the courage to participate after his friends insisted.
"I have really enjoyed being around all of the people in the play," Colton said. "Everyone is so encouraging and we have become really close. My favorite part of the story is probably when Simba realizes that he needs to grow up and has a conversation with his dad in the sky."
He said the audience is sure to enjoy the stunts.
"There are even parts when we are throwing people around," he said. "It’s pretty great."
Shay said the audience will most enjoy the humorous moments.
"This show really gives the whole cast moments of simply having fun while laughing together as friends," she said. "It creates a fun and enjoyable space for the audience to be involved in, too."
She said the most special part of this production is the songs that point back to Jesus.
"Yes, even in the 'Lion King,'" she said. "I think that can make people wonder what it is about us that makes us special, and can possibly push them to step into curiosity to learn more about the Lord."
