COEUR d’ALENE — Post Falls senior distance runner Sammie Wood has been on her own level this season, from the very start.

Wood captured the 3,200-meter run Thursday on the first day the 5A Region 1 track and field meet at Coeur d'Alene, winning in 10 minutes, 37.42 seconds.

Wood has broken school records in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 this season, as well as in the distance medley relay.

“I think this year I’ve really dialed into having fun,” Wood said. “Even the times when it's not really that fun. Pushing yourself to the hardest you can always hurts. But I’m having more fun with the process this year.”

Wood signed with Boise State in November to run cross country and track and field.

“I’m really looking forward to Boise,” Wood said. “I love all the recruit teammates. I never really put any pressure on myself to hit a certain time for college. But I’m just really excited for college.”

Wood holds the top time in the state in 5A in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 53.64 seconds) and is second in the 800 (2:12.74).

“In years past, I’ve had the idea that I could be a state champion, but I didn’t have the workouts and fitness to support it,” Wood said. “This year, all the pieces are kind of coming together. I’m just going down there with a lot of confidence and excitement.”

It’s something that Wood, normally quiet when it comes to speaking about goals, has been a little more open about in recent days.

“Just two days ago, I was telling my coaches it would be pretty cool to be a state champion,” Wood said. “They were just telling me how much they believe in me. Just hearing that from them, it’s an honor.”

With weather not being ideal for many events this year, Lakeland High senior Grant Roth was more than thrilled with just a little wind and sun on Thursday afternoon.

“It’s our first meet where it’s actually warm, so we’re all feeling good,” Roth said. “It was fun. We were just having a lot of fun out there.”

Roth finished runner-up in the boys 4A shot put, finishing with a throw of 41 feet, 10 inches.

“Throws haven’t always been the biggest thing for me because I’ve normally been a jumper,” Roth said. “I just started throwing this year and want to have some fun. I really enjoyed the discus in junior high, and got a little stronger over the summer and figured I might as well try it. And it’s working out.”

Roth, an all-4A Inland Empire League selection in basketball, said he intends to play basketball in college, either at NJCAA Salt Lake Community College or Division III Southern Virginia University.

The first nine events of regionals were held on Thursday at Coeur d'Alene High, with the meet concluding today in Lewiston starting at 2 p.m.

In 5A, the top three individuals and winning relay team advance to state at Dona Larsen Park in Boise starting next Friday. A possible wild card is available for the second-place relay.

In 4A, only the top two individuals and winning relay advance to state.
