PREP BASEBALL: Schneider nearly perfect; Coeur d'Alene to play Lewiston for regional title

| May 10, 2022 1:30 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Ryan Schneider got the win for Coeur d’Alene on Monday.

Diamond Dry got the save.

Schneider pitched a five-inning one-hitter with nine strikeouts as the No. 2 seed Coeur d’Alene Vikings beat the No. 3 Lake City Timberwolves 11-1 in the first round of the 5A Region 1 tournament at Ted Page Field.

Coeur d’Alene (18-6) will play at No. 1 Lewiston (20-5) today at 4 at Church Field for the regional championship and a berth to state next week in Caldwell. Lake City (10-11) will play host to Post Falls (10-13), which fell 11-5 at Lewiston on Monday, today at 4 in a loser-out game.

Schneider, a left-hander who has signed with NCAA Division I Belmont University in Nashville, retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced Monday. The only blemish was a home run to left field by Camdyn Martindale with two out in the fourth.

“He’s had a week off,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “He always throws best with five or six days of rest. He came in with a great focus today. That’s the best five innings I’ve seen him pitch.”

“Ryan Schneider pitched a heckuva game,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “And we never put any pressure on Coeur d’Alene’s defense. He kept us at bay the whole game; he was owning the strike zone. He’s an emotional pitcher, and he was feeding off that emotion and adrenaline.”

Cooper Erickson hit a two-run single to highlight a three-run first inning for Coeur d’Alene. Cooper Larson finished 2 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored, including an RBI double in the third and a three-run triple in the fifth.

“We had great approaches at the plate all day,” Karns said.

Coeur d’Alene went through an estimated 20-25 bags of Diamond Dry to get the field back playable after a downpour soaked the field just over an hour before first pitch.

“I applaud Erik and his coaching staff and players for getting that field ready,” Manzardo said. “We’d have never gotten to play if he and his staff and players hadn’t put all that work in.”

"I'm glad we got it in," Karns said, "because with the pitch count rules, it would have put both Paul and I at a disadvantage with pitching."

Lake City pitchers walked eight, and the T-Wolves committed three errors.

“Obviously I didn’t have the kids ready to play,” Manzardo said, “and I’ll take ownership of that. Hopefully we can turn it around tomorrow.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Grant Allaway, Cooper Lenz and Joseph Borges drove in three runs each for the host and top-seeded Tigers in the first round of the 3A District 1 tournament.

Timberlake (14-6) will play host to No. 2 seed Bonners Ferry (12-11) in the championship game Wednesday at 3 p.m. No. 4 Priest River (2-17) will travel to No. 3 Kellogg (9-9) on Wednesday at 3 in a loser-out game.

Horn doubled and tripled for Timberlake, finishing 3 for 4 with three runs scored in the game played through a rainstorm for the first few innings.

“The elements were not great,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “(Starting pitcher) Kenny Wells’ stat line did not reflect how well he pitched. I wouldn’t have wanted to pitch in that situation. It was rainy and cold and windy. I thought we battled, and we hung in there, and weathered the storm — literally.”

Everett Hannah went 3 for 4 for Priest River.

“It’s funny; I can’t remember playing anybody but Timberlake in the district championship,” longtime Bonners coach Tom Turpin said. “It should be a dandy.”
