POST FALLS — As the wind howled and rain continued to punish each and every athlete on the track and field at Post Falls High, it was going to take a special kind of athlete of find success on Thursday afternoon in the annual District 1 all-star meet.

Zach Johnson, a three-sport athlete at Lake City High, has found ways to adapt, whether it be on the track, basketball court or football field.

“Most of it is just a mental approach to things,” said Johnson, a junior. “You’ve got to go out and get a good time, focus on what you can do to get better and improve throughout the season.”

Johnson, along with teammates Zachary Adkinson, Trevor Cogley and Christian Weber, won the 4x200 relay in 1 minute, 31.97 seconds, all the while fighting through wind and rain throughout the race.

“It’s fun,” Johnson said. “You’re out there with the guys competing. Some people didn't want to compete today because of the weather and scratched. We figured, we’re here, we’re going to run regardless.”

Post Falls, anchored by senior Dalton Wild, scratched from the relay. Wild did not compete on Thursday due to an injury — he needed stitches in his right foot after stepping on glass last week — but said he’ll return for the 5A Region 1 meet next Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Wild and Johnson have the top two times, respectively, in District 1 in the 100, as do their 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.

“Last year, Zach was the big dog for the 100, so I knew I had to step it up this year,” said Wild, a senior and wide receiver in football. “I had to do my best to compete with him. Working for the state meet and winning a state championship is what I’m trying to do now. Zach’s a beast for sure and he’s a great competitor and I love running against him.”

“For me, he’s a track kid and I’m a football kid,” said Johnson, who scratched in the 100 and 200 Thursday because of the conditions. “I just try to come out and work on things for football and try my best. If I win, then it is what it is.”

Post Falls junior Annastasia Peters set meet records in the 1,600 (4 minutes, 56.58 seconds) and 3,200 (10:59.75). Previous marks were held by Caitlin Conway of Coeur d’Alene in the 1,600 (5:16.84 in 2017) and Kinsey Gomez of Coeur d’Alene in the 3,200 (11:03.07 in 2009). Trojan senior Sammie Wood eclipsed the 800 record in 2:13.53, breaking her previous mark of 2:16.24 set in the 2021 meet.

No teams scores were kept in the event, which also inducted former Timberlake High star Caleb Cazier, Wallace’s Gretchen (Bailey) Mann and the late Dave Rounds, former Wallace track and field and football coach, into its Hall of Fame on Thursday afternoon.
