No time to doze on info superhighway

"Believe nothing, no matter where you read it or who has said it, not even if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense." — Buddha

'Tis the season.

Buddha might just as well have been talking about social and traditional media.

With a big primary election headed down the pike on a special day, May 17, you're likely to be assaulted by massive waves of information, misinformation and disinformation.

You've got an advantage over Buddha, who preceded Google by a millennium or two. There are now simple ways to check many of the things being asserted. The more inflammatory the message, the more you need to do a little digging in search of some truth.

That's particularly important with internet innuendo, but more traditional media also needs checks and balances, and vigilant readers can provide that.

'Tis the season. In addition to a special election day headed your way, there's another spring tradition rounding the bend. Be prepared for tall tales, and if one happens to cross your path, do two things:

1) Get out of the way before it falls on you.

2) Don't forget to smile.

Because we all need friendly reminders to question everything, no matter how real or believable it at first seems.
