Vikings edge Centennial,
power past Eagle
EAGLE — To be successful this season, Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns told junior pitcher Cooper Erickson he’d have to know his spots, and hit them early and often.
So he did.
Erickson allowed six hits over 6 ⅔ innings for the Vikings, who beat the Centennial Patriots 3-1 at Eagle High.
“He really did a good job and commanded the strike zone,” Karns said. “They hit him a little bit in the first inning, but he responded and kept them off balance the rest of the game. He was spotting his fastball and working off that.”
Later, Coeur d’Alene slugged past Eagle 16-6 to improve to 3-3 on the season. The Vikings reached on 12 walks in the game.
“We challenged the boys in between games today,” Karns said. “We drove down today and left at 4 a.m., and the boys responded well, and the Eagle game showed it. We put together four good innings, gave up six runs (in the third), but answered with seven in the fourth inning. Offensively, we just put the ball in play and took advantage of the walks we were given.”
Ryan Schneider had three RBIs and three runs scored for Coeur d'Alene, and Evan Mallory had three hits and two runs scored against Eagle.
Coeur d’Alene plays at Rocky Mountain today, facing the Grizzlies at 9 a.m. PDT, then Madison of Rexburg at 12:15 p.m.

BOISE — The Warhawks of Nampa used a six-run bottom of the fourth inning to pull away after the Hawks had tied the game 1-1 in the first inning at the Buck’s Bags Spring Classic at Capital High.
“We weren’t mentally prepared for the game today, and it showed on the field,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We made a lot of mistakes that really hurt us. Ridgevue is a good team that executes the game very well. We had some positive things to build on, and I’ll make sure my team gets those early season mistakes cleaned up.”
Blaze Day drove in two runs for Lakeland (1-2), which concludes the tournament today at 9 a.m. PDT against Nampa Christian at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.
