An even dozen dogs

For the second time in the past year, the Kootenai Humane Society has received dogs from a hoarding situation in Idaho.

KHS on Saturday took in 12 Chihuahuas, terriers and dachshunds ranging in age from 4 months to 5 years old.

They were among 72 dogs found in a yard area at a trailer at a dairy farm near Jerome on March 12.

Mountain Humane took 52 of the dogs that were surrendered by the owners. The dogs were generally in good condition and had food.

Mountain Humane shelter spayed or neutered the dogs, gave them vaccinations and dewormed them. It also contacted other shelters for help and some went to foster homes.

The dogs were transported by vehicle to KHS, where pairs were sharing kennels.

“We said we could take 16,” said Vicky Nelson, KHS spokeswoman on Monday. “We wound up with 12.”

KHS microchipped the dogs, gave them flea treatments and reviewed their overall health.

They should be up for adoption this week and are expected to find homes soon. Most are friendly, while some are frightened.

All are popular breeds.

“They’re small. Smalls go faster than anything,” Nelson said.

According to the Idaho Mountain Express, a dairy farm worker and their spouse had been told by the dairy owner that they would be evicted if they didn’t get rid of their dogs.

Last June, KHS took in 66 dogs from a hoarding situation in Kellogg. They included terriers, Jack Russells and Chihuahuas, puppies to adults.

All 66 were adopted.
