A welcome for Vietnam vets

| March 9, 2022 1:00 AM

The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution in Coeur d’Alene will honor Vietnam War veterans and their families on March 29, the fifth anniversary of National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

The event, “Soldiers of Vietnam — Welcome Home!” is an effort "to welcome our Vietnam veterans home with applause and appreciation, as they all should have been welcomed many years ago."

“The Daughters of the American Revolution is proud to be a commemorative partner, and it is our honor to recognize and thank our Vietnam veterans who served our country and sacrificed so much,” said Barb Nelson, organizer.

It will be held at Candlelight Christian Fellowship, 5725 N. Pioneer Drive, Coeur d’Alene.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and wrap up by 1 p.m. It will be livestreamed at candlelight.org for anyone who would like to watch remotely.

The U.S. Department of Defense created a Commemorative Partner Program in 2014 to pay tribute to those who served during the Vietnam War period.

On March 28, 2017, President Donald Trump signed legislation to enact the National Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017, establishing National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

“We hope there will be a good turnout and that the Vietnam veterans will appreciate our efforts to celebrate them as they should have been celebrated when they came home many years ago," Nelson said.
