TRACK AND FIELD

Nine local youth athletes from the North Idaho Blaze Track and Field Club have qualified for the 2022 National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif., scheduled for July 25-July 31.

Over the course of eight weeks of competition throughout the Inland and Pacific Northwest regions, athletes had to qualify through a series of qualifier and regional meets and place in the top 8 in order to qualify for the national event.

Middle schoolers Lauren Hubbard (triple jump), Lola Baine and Madden Bojorquez (high jump), Emily Russell (200-meter hurdles) and Josh Yeager (3,000 meters) qualified for their age groups. Also, four students from local high schools will have the opportunity to compete against the best in the nation with Maricela Nelson running in both the 100 and 200, Nathan Russell for the 800 and 1,500, Levi Bird for the 3,000, and McKenna Kozeluh for both the 1,500 and 3,000.

The North Idaho Blaze Track and Field Club was founded in 2020 by four-time National Junior Olympic qualifier Maricela Nelson, as she established the club as a part of her Girl Scout Silver Award. This was the third competitive season in the club’s history with 52 student/athletes competing this year in a variety of track and field events led by head coach Linda Lanker and assisted by coaches Chris Patterson, Greg Owens, Christian Carvajal, Jay Matous, Darlene Shriner, McKenzie Fletcher, Kiley Cutler, Kristine Rothwell, Emily Ginter and volunteer coaches Chris Ward and Clint Clifford.
