LEGION BASEBALL: Robinett, Wysong lead Northern Lakes in district opener
LEWISTON — Caden Robinett drove in five runs and Payden Wysong pitched a one-hit shutout as the top-seeded Northern Lakes Mountaineers beat No. 4 Orofino 14-0 in the first round of the Idaho class A Area A (district) tournament Thursday on a hot day at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field.
Robinett hit two-run singles in the third and fourth innings for Northern Lakes (17-13), which plays the No. 3 seed Lewis-Clark Cubs today at 4 p.m. in the second round.
“Caden has swung it really well,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said. “And a lot of it was with two strikes. He was big-time for us.”
Scott Pote went 3 for 3 and drove in two runs for the Mountaineers. Wysong had two hits, two RBIs and scored four runs, and Jacob Hessing hit a two-run double in the second.
Wysong struck out three, walked four. Orofino’s lone hit was a one-out single in the third.
“Our approaches at the plate were really good,” Johnson said. “We talked about being aggressive and getting off to a fast start (because of the heat). Payden pitched really well, and we made good plays behind him. But we swung it really well — probably the best we’ve swung it all year.”
