Flowers, a plaque and a warm welcome were how Lakeland Joint School Board trustees celebrated Superintendent Lisa Arnold at the start of the board meeting Wednesday evening.

"Mrs. Arnold, the board of trustees is honored to welcome you as the Lakeland Joint School District superintendent," Board Chair Michelle Thompson said to Arnold. "You have committed 31 years of dedication to the educational profession, which is commendable. And the fact that your 31-year commitment has been in this district is extraordinary."

Arnold officially began her tenure as superintendent July 1 after eight years as assistant superintendent and 23 years as a principal or teacher in the district.

Thompson said Arnold's foundation of leadership began with Trustee Bob Jones, who is a former district superintendent.

"Now you are able to lead this district as our superintendent," Thompson said.

She said Arnold has listened to parents, peers and colleagues throughout her career, but most importantly, the students.

"You made safety a No. 1 priority," Thompson said to Arnold. "You are the founder of our armed guard program and implemented an environment of safety within each building in our district. Your passion for literacy with children and adults is immeasurable. And your love for education is a breath of fresh air for our district.

"I know you will lead the Lakeland Joint School District with integrity, genuineness and a thorough understanding of the communities our district represents," Thompson continued.

She presented Arnold the plaque as a reminder she is valued and as a recognition of her dedication.

"Welcome aboard," Thompson said.

"I just can't tell you how honored I am to be in this position and that I get to work with people who care so deeply about our district," Arnold responded. "Together we are going to do great things."
