Thorns girls team raising money for trip to nationals

A GoFundMe page has been created to help cover expenses for the Thorns North FC girls 2007 soccer team, which has qualified for the U.S. Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, scheduled for July 7-10 in Greensboro, N.C.

The Thorns feature players from Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, Liberty Lake, Spokane Valley, Boise, Driggs and Idaho Falls.

As of Thursday afternoon, the team had raised $6,345 of its goal of $30,000.

Hatley ties for third at Washington men's am

RICHLAND, Wash. — Reid Hatley of Hayden Lake finished tied for third at the 101st Washington Men's Amateur Championship at Meadow Springs Country Club, which concluded Thursday.

Hatley shot 75-73-68—216, even par.

Gonzaga golfer Jace Minni of Delta, British Columbia, shot rounds of 73-73-68—214, 2 under par, and won by one shot over Max Herendeen of Bellevue, Wash.

Former Post Falls High golfer Joseph Glenn finished tied for 11th. He shot 82-73-66—221, 5 over par.

Cougars add two football games with San Jose State

PULLMAN — Washington State has agreed to a home-and-home football series with San Jose State beginning in 2024, athletic director Pat Chun announced.

The first game is scheduled to be played in Pullman, Sept. 21, 2024, with the return contest in San Jose, Calif., Sept. 6, 2031.

Washington State leads the all-time series against the Spartans 8-4-1, with the last meeting coming in 2018, a 31-0 Cougar victory in Pullman. The series began in 1955 with the only tie of the series, a 13-13 final in Pullman in a game known as the “Refrigerator Bowl” with a kickoff temperature of 5 degrees and a wind chill well below zero.

WSU has won the last two meetings in the series, 2018 and also in 1996, a 52-16 victory also in Pullman. The last meeting in San Jose ended in a 46-0 Cougar win in 1968.

Boise State announces football schedule changes, including game with EWU

BOISE — Boise State and Memphis have agreed to a home-and-home football series, highlighting future schedule changes, Bronco athletic director Jeramiah Dickey announced Wednesday.

The series will begin at Memphis in 2023 and the Tigers will visit Albertsons Stadium in 2026. Game dates are yet to be announced.

Boise State and Memphis will now meet four times from 2023-31. In January 2021, Boise State announced it will visit Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Aug. 31, 2030 and host Memphis on Sept. 13, 2031.

Boise State also announced its home-and-home series with Rice will begin in Houston during the 2032 season with the Owls returning the trip in 2035. Previously, the games were scheduled for 2027 and 2029.

To complete its 2025 nonconference schedule, Boise State will host Eastern Washington. The Eagles have participated in three of the last four FCS Playoffs, including a runner-up finish in 2018.

EWU, Southeastern Louisiana announce football home-and-home

Two Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs in Eastern Washington and Southeastern Louisiana will face off in 2023 and 2024, the schools announced Thursday.

The Eagles will host the Lions on Sept. 16, 2023 in Cheney, before making the return trip to Hammond, La., on Sept. 14, 2024 at Strawberry Stadium. It will be the first all-time meeting between the foes, and EWU owns a 6-7 overall record against Southland Conference opponents.

Like Eastern Washington, SLU advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs in 2021, and the squads also boast the two most recent Walter Payton Award winners. SLU's Cole Kelley won in 2020-21 and Eric Barriere was awarded in 2021. Both finished runner-up to each other in the year that they did not win.

The Lions made their fourth trip to the postseason in 2021 and the third to the second round, finishing 9-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
