PREP WRESTLING: Vikings win Rumble for first time since 2011

COEUR d’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene, behind champions Porter Craig (145 pounds), Gunner Giulio (170), Rylan Rogers (195) and Beau Speelman (220) ran away with the team title at the 12th annual North Idaho Rumble on Saturday at Coeur d’Alene High.

Coeur d’Alene finished with 274.5 points, with Post Falls second with 247.5. It is the Vikings' first team title at their home tournament since 2011, in the inaugural year of the tournament.

“I like that we’re wrestling hard and looking to score points and not making a lot of mistakes,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We’re starting to get healthy in the last four weeks of the season. This is a tough tournament, and Post Falls has a heck of a team and regionals is going to be a battle for numbers. We just need to keep focused and keep making adjustments. It's nice to win your own tournament."

Post Falls won the past 10 tournaments.

Rider Seguine (98) was the Trojans' lone champion, with Jose Laguna (170), Gentry Smith (182) and Luke Martin (220) finishing runner-up. Other Trojan placers were Tyson Barnhart (third at 120), Seth Martin (third at 138), Walker Rouse (third at 145), Alex Austin (fourth at 145), Keanyn DeGroat (fourth at 182), John Rudebaugh (fourth at 152) and Zack Campbell (sixth at 113).

“Our guys wrestled really well,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “I feel like our depth is coming through and our kids are getting tougher. We’re getting better and the kids are doing a good job.”

Dylan Moffat (138), Demarco Piazza (152) and Jaxson Washington (285) each finished runner-up for Coeur d’Alene. Other Viking placers were Dax Larsen (fourth at 132), Sebastian Prangley (fourth at 160) and Carsen Speelman (fifth at 160).

Matt Williams (third at 113), Devon Suko (third at 170), Lucas Williams (fifth at 138) and Preston Jeffs (fifth at 285) guided Lakeland to a seventh-place finish in the 18-team tournament with 115 points.

Grey Shinkle (third at 182), Kaleb Jacobs (fifth at 132), Kenzie Lindsay (fifth at 145) and Blaine Leonard (sixth at 126) placed for Lake City, which was ninth.

Kellogg’s Wyatt Hei (113) and Bonners Ferry’s Eli Richards (182) also won titles.

In the girls tournament, Coeur d'Alene's Alyssa Randles (126) and Cara Brown (145), as well as Post Falls' Abigale Piper (138) won titles.

No girls team scores were kept.
