PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Lake City turns it up on 'D'

| January 30, 2022 1:15 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — It’s kind of like a good song on the radio. When you hear it, you turn it up.

Same goes for defense on the basketball court.

When you need it, you take that up another level.

Lake City, keyed by a 15-0 run in the fourth quarter, ran past the Mead Panthers 64-47 in a nonleague game at Lake City High on Saturday.

“I really thought with our defense, we turned it up a notch in the fourth quarter,” Lake City coach Jim Winger said. “We really gave up two points in the fourth, and they hit a long 3-pointer at the end of the game. But our guys really got after it in the fourth quarter. In the last few games, our guys have really gotten after it on defense, and that’s what you want this time of year.”

Junior guard Kolton Mitchell scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half, and also contributed seven rebounds and seven assists for Lake City (16-0).

“He was just solid tonight,” Winger said. “He had a great night.”

Junior Blake Buchanan had 18 points and nine rebounds, Nathan Hocking 13 points and eight rebounds and Zach Johnson 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who host Post Falls on Tuesday.

Zack Reighard had 11 points for Mead (6-10).
