New arrival applauds great service

I am a new arrival to CDA (December 2021). After getting my utilities hooked up in my name, one of the first things I did was subscribe to The Press. Local news is the best way to get a feel of the area for a newcomer.

I noticed that I was consistently not getting a paper on Mondays. That wasn't a big deal, as I could take a look online. It wasn't until I read your article/letter that I understood the reason.

Back in the mid-'50s I was 12 years old. My first "real" job was delivering an afternoon paper. I'd get home from school and soon a bundle of papers would be waiting for me to fold and put on my bicycle.

I didn't have a big route. Maybe only 70+/- customers. Aside from getting my hands black with ink from folding, there was the "pain" of having to collect for the subscriptions once per month. (I guess that experience ratifies the saying "no pain, no gain." LOL)

I never considered my job as being one which contributed to the noble cause of protecting democracy or maintaining the First Amendment. Rather, it was a way a kid could make some movie money or buy a book or buy a new tire for his bike.

In the six weeks since I've been a Press subscriber, I've only missed getting a paper on Mondays. Whether there was snow on my unplowed street or ice on the walkway up to my porch, The Press has always been right at my doorstep before 6 a.m. Such service requires real commitment and dedication on the part of the "paper boy."

When I visit a restaurant and receive good to exceptional service, I always tip the server. I would like the option to do the same with "my" carrier(s). I seem to recall that my subscription to the local paper in my former hometown had an option where I could check a box or add an amount for such a gratuity. This might be something that The Press might consider to help attract and retain good carriers.
