KELLOGG — Hailey Cheney notched a go-ahead layup with 1:14 remaining in overtime, Emily Coe hit two free throws with 24.5 seconds remaining and the Kellogg Wildcats handed the Timberlake Tigers their first Intermountain League loss in seven seasons, 59-53 at Andrew Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Cheney had 33 points and 13 rebounds, Coe 12 points and 11 rebounds and Grace Nearing six rebounds for Kellogg (9-4, 2-1 IML), which beat Timberlake for the first time since Jan. 11, 2014. Timberlake had won 42 straight league games dating back to an overtime loss at home to Bonners Ferry late in the 2015 season.

“Timberlake played aggressive defense and forced us into a lot of turnovers, so hats off to them,” Kellogg coach Jana Nearing said. “I’m just really proud of our girls handling the pressure and accomplishing our goal tonight.”

McKennah Kronenberg had 16 points for Timberlake (12-5, 4-1), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Friday.

PLUMMER — Arianna Havier-Gorr poured in 20 points as the host Knights, playing for the first time in 17 days due to COVID-19 protocols, defeated the Jaguars in Scenic Idaho Conference play at Ron Miller Court.

Jolissa Holt added nine points for Lakeside (6-4, 1-0 SIC), which pulled away after leading 28-25 at halftime.

“It was kind of rough like I’d expected,” said Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman, whose team hadn’t played or practiced since Jan. 8 due to a COVID-19 pause. “We started kind of slow and picked things up defensively in the second half. It was nice to get a win, especially a league win after having a two week break. It was a good team effort and good game to come back to.”

Belle Deboer led Genesis Prep (6-6, 0-2) with 13 points.

Genesis Prep plays at the Lakeland “C” team tonight at 6:30.

SANDPOINT — After the host Bulldogs pulled within 44-42 early in the fourth quarter, the Lumberjacks answered with an 8-0 run to regain control of the nonleague game at Les Rogers Court.

Coleman Ross had a couple layups during that run for St. Maries (11-2), and Greyson Sands had a couple key steals and a layup.

“I thought it was one of our more complete games,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “I felt like the two previous games we played one good half each. I thought we competed well tonight, with our defense and our energy and our hustle.”

Tristan Gentry-Nelson had 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists for St. Maries, which won its sixth straight game. Colby Renner had five boards, Sands three steals.

Ethan Butler scored 17 points for Sandpoint (4-11).

"They are awfully good," Sandpoint coach Brian Childs said of St. Maries. "They're the defending state champs and they have a lot of kids back, a lot of kids that know how to win, and I think that's a big part of it.

"They're big, they're long and they're athletic," he added, "and so we had some trouble around the basket, and we rely on the 3-point shot and it was not kind to us tonight."

St. Maries plays host to Grangeville on Saturday in a Central Idaho League game.

PLUMMER — Vander Brown scored 28 points as the host Knights, playing for the first time in 22 days due to COVID-19 protocols, beat the Jaguars in Scenic Idaho Conference play at Ron Miller Court.

Lakeside (5-3, 1-0 SIC) last played at the Coeur d’Alene junior varsity on Jan. 3, then the program — and later, the school, was shut down by the coronavirus. Until Monday, the Knights hadn’t practiced since that game against the Vikings.

“I knew it would be a tough task for them to come back and play,” Lakeside coach James Twoteeth said. “I knew it would take a while for our legs to come back. We had been out for three weeks; the whole team basically got COVID. We had one practice yesterday, and we had a game.”

Twoteeth praised the vocal leadership of Brown, a junior, after the Knights picked it up on defense in the second half after trailing 27-22 at halftime.

“Our defense wasn't very good to start out with. The first two quarters we couldn't guard anybody,” Twoteeth said. “The third quarter started diving around on the floor and got back into the game. Vander was very vocal tonight. They finally started listening to him and playing defense, and that came from him.”

Caleb Schroeder scored 15 points, Joey Specht 13 for Genesis Prep, which returns to action Feb. 4 at home vs. Lakeside.

Lakeside plays host to Kootenai on Friday.
