LODGE: Restoration works

| January 5, 2022 1:00 AM

A recent Coeur d’Alene Press article written by Dave Walker and Sandy Emerson draws attention to a strong undercurrent of energy devoted to the preservation of “historic gems” here in our community.

Enlarging on Dave and Sandy’s viewpoint, I would like to recognize the amazing work of restoration being undertaken by the current owners of the Cougar Bay Lodge.

Originally built on the shore of Casco Bay in the early 1930s, this historic log structure was saved from the wrecking ball in 2008 by Rocky and Mary Watson, who had the vision to cut the house in half and barge it around the point to its current waterfront location beneath The Ridge at Cougar Bay.

Jeff and Cara Anthony purchased the Lodge in 2018 with the goal of continuing the Watsons’ good work returning this unique building to its past glory and honoring the memory of its prior occupants who had an enormous and long-lasting impact on the history of Coeur d’Alene.

The Cougar Bay Lodge, like the old White house that the Museum of North Idaho recently moved to McEuen Park, proves that “relocation” is a viable alternative to demolition for those wanting to preserve and protect the character, craftsmanship and legacy of our hidden gems. It is important to encourage and support these efforts.
