Joseph Andrew Emerson (Joe)

June 8, 1965 – Feb. 20, 2022

Joe passed from non-Covid complications of pneumonia at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash., on Feb. 20, 2022.

He was born to James and Jean Emerson in Whitefish, Mont. He moved to St. Maries, Idaho, then to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School. He independently traveled to other places including, Seattle and Spokane, Wash., where he finally settled. Once out on his own, Joe stayed in several group homes. He worked hard to become independent, and successfully moved into an apartment on his own in Spokane.

Joe was a people person, and loyal friend, who often put other’s needs before his own. His positive personality, and desire to please, were two of his constant attributes. If Joe faltered in word or actions, he tried to make it right. He wanted his family and friends to be proud of him and he was blessed with relationships that enriched his life.

Joe is survived by his father, James Emerson Sr., his older sister, Jan Sheldon (Dave), his older brother, James Emerson Jr. (Brenda) and their children, numerous step relatives; including Mike Wilson with whom he had a special bond, his Uncle Jack Emerson, many cousins, one of which was Vicki Furlong who always showed a special interest in Joe, and his special caregiver, Susanna De Leon to whom his family will be forever grateful for her genuine and loving care of Joe.

His mother, Jean Emerson, preceded him in death in 2010.

Joe will be interned at Forest Cemetery, in Coeur d’Alene, Wall K, next to his mother. We will post the memorial date on Joe’s Facebook and in the newspaper when arrangements are made.

Joe will be missed.

If you would like to contribute to a charity, Joe benefited from The Arc — a work force and community center for people with developmental disabilities. He also enjoyed his involvement with the Special Olympics.
