COMMUNISM: Scary shadows remain

| February 16, 2022 1:00 AM

Over the years I’ve seen many references to socialism and communism in letters to the editor with pejorative intent. That is reminiscent of the ’40s and ’50s, when the mere mention of those words sent chills up and down the spines of citizens.

That was the cold war era and the emergence of the nuclear age. It was scary.

In general, and specifically here, in our safe and lovely corner of the world I suspect that it has that effect on a small number of people whose main intent is to maintain the status quo or even go back to “better times.” They are deathly afraid of the liberalization of our society for a variety of reasons, none of which can be used to make a good counter argument but are useful for drawing in those who are kindred spirits.
