WATER POLO

The KROC/CDA Water Polo Club boys and girls teams succeeded in defending their state high school championship in Boise over the weekend tournament of Jan. 28-29.

In doing so, the Coeur d’Alene team has extended its series of Idaho state championship titles to nine years in a row. In the championship games, the boys team beat Magic Valley 14-6, while the girls team also beat Magic Valley 14-4.

Men’s Division

In the early round of the state competition, the KROC/CDA men’s team outscored Boise on Friday 14-5. The CDA squad outscored Boise in the first quarter by a score of 4-0 and steadily built the lead over the rest of the game with several goals from counter-attacks, set goals and man-up situations. The team had spread its scoring with goals from a number of players, including Ethan Halsted (3), Quade Castanada (3), Isaac Thorpe (2), Thomas LaBelle (2), Lance Emry (2), Ben Simmons (1) and Jack Rigg (1). Ethan Halsted also helped the team’s scoring with four assists and two steals during the game. In goal, Jack Fritz-Hooper minimized Boise’s scoring with eight blocks, allowing only five goals during the game.

In the second round of the tournament, the CDA club played a young Rigby team and was able to quickly establish a lead in the game and then extend it to a final score of 17-7. Quade Castanada led all scorers with four goals, followed by Isaac Thorpe and Gavin Bentley both with three goals each. Other scorers included Mason Curry (2) and Zach Castanada, Thomas LaBelle, Ben Simmons scoring a goal each. Brody Walters was very active on defense with three steals and along with an assist. Jack Hooper-Fritz and Mason Curry combined in goal for seven saves during the game.

In the championship game, the CDA club immediately took the lead with Isaac Thorpe sprinting down the pool after winning possession on the start, then continuing his drive down to the goal, receiving an on-target pass and scoring only 10 seconds into the game. CDA followed that up by shocking Magic Valley in scoring three more times in the first two minutes of the game, quickly building a lead of 4-0. The boys then steadily built their lead, eventually winning by a score of 14-6. Senior Ethan Halsted led the scoring with five goals, followed by freshman Isaac Thorpe scoring four, junior Quade Castanada with two and Thomas LaBelle, Jack Rigg and Ben Simmons scoring one goal each. Ethan Halsted and Quade Castanada took turns establishing a strong hole position, forcing the Magic Valley team to drop to assist, but this left players on top open for shots on goal. Thomas Labelle was able to control Magic Valley’s hole set, reducing their team to trying to take outside shots while being heavily pressed by the rest of the team. Jack Hooper-Fritz had several outstanding runs in goal, blocking repeated one on goalie shot opportunities from Magic Valley late in the game.

Women’s Division

In the women’s division, the Kroc/CDA team came out with a very fast offense and tough defense. During Friday’s first-round game the girls combined to outscore the Boise squad by a score of 14-4. The team scored with a variety of quick counter-attacks, outside shots, hole shots and drives. CDA’s scoring was initiated with two quick goals from first year player Gianna Gonzalez (4) who led all scorers. Goals also came from from Joslyn Dimitri (3), Ashley Schneider (2), Emma Fritz-Hooper (2), Maren Hover (1), Simone Gonzalez (1) and Elery Sterling (1).

In Saturday’s second round game, the CDA club played a young Rigby team and was able to quickly dominate the game. Ryenne Ayers led all scorers with five goals, followed by Gianna Gonzalez who continued her scoring streak with four goals in the game. Other players who scored included Simone Gonzalez with two goals followed by Emeri Lukey, Ashley Schneider and Joslyn Dimitri with a goal each.

In the women’s championship game, the CDA team again ran out to a quick lead and were able establish control throughout the game. Joslyn Dimitri was dominant at the hole set position, forcing the Magic Valley women to focus much of their effort on shutting her down. The team scored with a variety of quick counter-attacks, outside wing shots, hole shots and drives. Gianna Gonzalez led the scoring with four more goals in a great first-year performance, totaling a tournament high 10 goals over the weekend. Other goals were scored by Joslyn Dimitri (3), Emma Hooper (2), Ashley Schneider (2) along with Simone Gonzalez, Maren Hover and Elery Sterling all scoring a goal each. Ashley Schneider took a primary role on defense in shutting down the hole set for all the games, greatly reducing other teams’ ability to score and allowing the rest of the team to press players out of scoring positions. Freshman Amy Hooper-Fritz, filling in for an injured Alena Gonzalez, had an outstanding run in goal, combining for 11 saves over the three games of the tournament.

The club is already looking forward to next year’s season. While the team will lose some important players to graduation, including seniors Ethan Halsted, Thomas LaBelle, Zach Castanada, Ashley Schneider and Emma Hooper-Fritz, they are expecting an excellent group of new players from the team’s younger development squad to join the high school group.

The club practices year-round at the Kroc Aquatic Center and is open to all junior and senior high school students in the area.
