Edward 'Ed' Allen Pommerening, 75
Edward “Ed” Allen Pommerening, 75, of Kingston, Idaho, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from cardiac failure caused by a brief illness Dec. 24, 2022, at Shoshone Medical Center of Kellogg. He was born March 14, 1947, in Walla Walla, Wash. Ed was the son of Edwin and Grace Pommerening.
Ed attended and graduated from McLoughlin Union High School of Milton-Freewater, Ore. He attended the University of Idaho and received his bachelor's degree in agriculture/forestry. Ed then proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era in the 101st Airborne Rangers. After serving in the military, Ed furthered his education and received his master's degree in forestry from the U of I.
Ed moved to the Silver Valley in 1972, when asked to serve as a forester for the Bunker Hill Mining Company. He took the initiative to implement the massive project of reforestation, in solving a major environmental problem covering 18 square miles from 1974 to 1982 and then again from 1989 to 1994. It was the mining industry through the leadership of Ed and the help of local high school and college students that recovered what had been lost. Ed left a legacy of love for the Silver Valley and its people through the labor of the Bunker Hill reforestation project and underground nursery. In 1993, and to the present, Ed served as owner and operator of Riverview Timber Services, LLC.
Ed married Sandra Herrera on May 21, 1999, in Ogden, Utah.
Ed was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He had also served on the Kellogg School District board, the Shoshone Medical Center board of trustees, and as president of the Kootenai/Shoshone Soil and Water Conservation District.
Above all, Ed loved and enjoyed his family. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cooking, off-shore ocean fishing for halibut and salmon and walking the mountains with his black Labs.
Ed is survived by his wife, Sandra, of the family home of Kingston; four children, Rachael and Cory Whitfield of Strasburg, Pa.; Eric Pommerening and his fiancée, Lisa James, of Irving, Texas, Seth and Hilary Pommerening of Post Falls, Idaho and Jakob and Mary Pommerening of Lebanon, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Zoe, Avry, Jameson, Emelia, Levi, Grace, Brynlee and Weston; one brother, Ron Winkleman of Denair, Calif. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, sister Theresa and brother William.
Memorial services will be held and announced at a later date.
