BORDER: Not the American way

| December 30, 2022 1:00 AM

In Sholeh Patrick’s article of Dec. 27 she asks, “Is this the American way?” We must then ask are we speaking about it logically, morally or legally? What is happening at our border is unacceptable and absolutely not the American way.

There is a benefit to legal immigration from an ethical standpoint. Opening one’s borders to allow people to have the chance to start a new life for themselves is a morally correct position. In 2020 alone, the U.S. has legally allowed 707,362 immigrants to become citizens.

Our U.S. Constitution, which was written in God’s image, teaches us a Rule of Law that we must follow. The Executive Branch enforces laws that support the equality of all citizens, prevents the arbitrary use of power, protects people from conflicts, and provides law and order.

There is total chaos at our southern border. This is a clear violation of U.S. immigration laws. Since 2021 illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. cost taxpayers $20 billion a year, in addition to an extra $140 billion in existing illegal immigrants it already costs. This is not the American way. Our current administration is not protecting U.S. citizens from border security, protection of resources and jobs.

Let’s not confuse compassion with legality. It is our moral and legal duty to protect our U.S. citizens. It’s OK to be compassionate but don’t harm your neighbor while doing it.
