PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene boys finish fifth in Vegas
BOYS BASKETBALL
LAS VEGAS — After giving up a double-digit lead in the second half, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings regained control in overtime to beat the Foothill Falcons of nearby Henderson, Nev., 65-61 to take home fifth place out of 16 teams in the Spalding Bracket at the Tarkanian Classic on Thursday at Silverado High.
Senior Steven Burgess scored 17 points, and sophomore Carter Rupp added 14 off the bench for Coeur d’Alene (7-2), which went 3-1 in the tourney,
“This has been a great tournament for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “These teams are very good, very athletic. They play at a different pace than the teams do in Idaho. We got to play vs. teams that played up-tempo, teams that played physical, and we had to play under duress. We were in the right bracket; every team was tough; every game was close.”
Foothill is 7-3.
A complete box score was not available.
Coeur d’Alene plays host to Meridian, Bishop Kelly and Eagle next Tuesday through Thursday. Those Boise-area teams also play Lake City and Post Falls during their time here.

SPOKANE — The visiting Trojans trailed by eight points late in the third quarter, but missed shots and missed free throws ultimately caught up to them in the loss to the Saxons.
“We lost our composure, and the wheels fell off,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “From the get-go we didn’t shoot the ball well; we missed a ton of layups. At one point, we were 3 for 11 on free throws in the first half. We played well in the first half, and the second half, our frustration at missing shots affected us defensively. We kinda went rogue defensively.”
Neil McCarthy had 12 points, Asher Bowie 11 points and seven rebounds for Post Falls (1-8).
Junior Dylan Skaife of Ferris led all scorers with 24 points. He hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to increase the Saxons’ lead to 29-19, then converted four and-ones in the second half.
Post Falls plays host to Bishop Kelly on Tuesday, the first of three games in three days vs. Boise-area schools.

MESA, Ariz. — Samyha Suffren, who has signed with Virginia Tech, hit a tiebreaking 12-foot floater with 2.8 seconds left, and the Cougars of Concord, N.C., beat the Timberwolves in the third-place game of the Joe Smith Bracket at the Nike Tournament of Champions at Bank Bell Park.
After a Lake City timeout, Kursten McKellips threw the ball the length of the court. The pass ended up in the hands of Allie Bowman near the basket, but her shot from 5 feet away was knocked out of bounds at the buzzer.
Lake City (12-2) finished fourth in its bracket, winning its first two games, then losing in the semis.
“I'm happy with it,” Lake City coach James Anderson said of the tournament. “We had a real dud on Wednesday (a 32-point loss), and I’m happy how we responded. Heartbreaking to lose today, but happy how we bounced back.
“We got four really good games down here, and at a level of speed we normally don’t see. We started the tournament turning the ball over like crazy (against pressure), which i knew might happen. But today we were comfortable handing the ball, so we made adjustments.”
Junior Sophia Zufelt, despite battling flu-like symptoms all week, hit three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points for Lake City, which led 37-19 at halftime. Junior Avery Waddington added 11 points, and was named to the all-tournament team. Kamryn Pickford hit three 3s and scored 13.
“Avery played a balanced week,” Anderson said. “We had lots of really good efforts throughout the week. Today was Kursten’s best game. At some point in time, everybody had a really good run down here.”
Suffren led Cannon (10-5) with 15 points.
Lake City returns to action Jan. 5 at home vs. Sandpoint.

Mater Dei 66
Coeur d’Alene 55
LAS VEGAS — Playing for the fourth time in four days, the effort was there — eventually — but the outcome wasn’t quite in the favor of the Vikings.
Senior Madi Symons scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half for the Vikings in a loss to the Monarchs of Santa Ana, Calif., in the third-place game in the Diamond Bracket of the Tarkanian Classic at Durango High.
Mater Dei led 14-0 four minutes into the game.
“We gave them everything we had,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “We were really physically and mentally exhausted after four days. We had some good looks, but were leaving shots short and were a little slow on our defensive rotations. If you take out the first four minutes, we’re right there with them. We lost a game we should have won, but we wanted to come down and be tested.”
Coeur d’Alene (10-2) returns to action at North Central on Dec. 29.
Junior Jenessa Cotton scored 16 points for Mater Dei (9-2).

SPIRIT LAKE — The Tigers and Titans exchanged the lead like it was a holiday party in the final 90 seconds, then the Titans gave the home team the biggest gift of all.
An opportunity to end it in regulation.
Freshman Malia Miller made two free throws with .5 seconds remaining, sending the Tigers to a nonleague win.
Timberlake led 39-31 with 1:30 remaining. University’s Eliannah Ramirez hit a pair of 3-pointers and Julianna Jeross hit a jumper to tie the game at 39-39. University missed a shot to win the game with three seconds remaining, then fouled Miller as she tried to get up the court.
“They went into foul mode late because they had to,” Timberlake coach Matt Miller said. “We missed a bunch of free throws, then they kept fouling us. Malia got the rebound and they were still in foul mode and she made the shots she needed to.”
Malia Miller scored 18 points for Timberlake (8-0).
“I was really happy getting the W,” Matt Miller said. “I hope the girls learned a lot from this. They battled to get a big win against a big school.”
Cameron Roberts scored 10 points for University (4-3).

WRESTLING
Post Falls 67
Lakeland 15
RATHDRUM — Post Falls coach Pete Reardon wanted to challenge senior Trevor Miller, while also finding a spot for freshman Matt Ludwig in the varsity lineup.
So Miller, who won at 220 pounds at the Tri-State Invitational last Saturday, bumped up to 285, while Ludwig stepped in at 220 for the Trojans, who won eight matches by pin to defeat the Hawks at Lakeland High.
Miller pinned Lakeland senior Preston Jeffs in 2:54. Jeffs was fourth at 285 at Tri-State.
“That kid (Jeffs) is very tough and had Trevor in a couple of spots where he could have scored some points on him,” Reardon said. “He’s a really tough kid and Trevor just wrestled well and kept him in positions he knew he could win with and got a big pin.”
Jared Wallace (98 pounds), Zack Campbell (126), Trey Smith (145), Seth Martin (152), John Rudebaugh (160), Keanyn DeGroat (182), Gentry Smith (195) and Trevor Miller (285) also notched pins for Post Falls, which was second at last weekend’s Tri-State Invitational at North Idaho College.
Duke Williamson (113) won by pin for Lakeland.
Post Falls is off until the Rollie Lane Invitational on Jan. 6-7 at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
Lakeland will compete in the Chad E. Ross Memorial Tournament in St. Maries on Dec. 30.
