LAS VEGAS — Playing in the same arena where the Zags play in March, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings were slow to get out of the gate on Tuesday afternoon.

But after a quick run before the half, it was all Coeur d'Alene from there.

Junior guard Teagan Colvin scored 24 points and senior forward Madi Symons had 15 points and 18 rebounds for Coeur d'Alene, which beat the Vanden Vikings of Fairfield, Calif., 64-33 in a Diamond Bracket second-round game in the Tarkanian Classic at the Orleans Arena.

“We had a really slow starting first half, and I’m not quite sure why,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons said. “Maybe it was playing in the arena, but we got real stagnant. We started to push the ball and play with some pace and really got things rolling.”

Coeur d’Alene (10-0) outscored Vanden (7-5) 34-11 in the second half at the arena where the West Coast Conference men's and women's basketball tournaments have been held for years.

“We just weren’t in a good routine and didn’t get a good workout in before the game,” said Symons, whose team plays Sierra Canyon today at 5 p.m. in a semifinal game at Durango High. “We need to have a quicker start (against Sierra Canyon). But Teagan started hitting some shots, Madi got going and Kendall (Omlin) got going and played really well.”

Sierra Canyon is 8-0.

“That’s why we came down here,” Symons said. “We learned a valuable lesson today without taking a loss.”

MESA, Ariz. — The Timberwolves bounced back from a rough start to knock off the private school from Seattle and advance to the semifinal in the Joe Smith Bracket at the Nike Tournament of Champions at Bell Bank Park.

Lake City (12-0) trailed 21-9 after the first quarter, took the lead in the third quarter, saw the Lions (4-2) tie it with two minutes to go, then made the clutch plays down the stretch to win.

“I’m proud of our team for rallying, because it’s hard to do after that bad of a start,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We adjusted and we fought.”

After Lakeside tied it, senior Allie Bowman hit a clutch baseline basket to give the T-Wolves the lead. Lake City got a stop and called a timeout. Emberlyn Reynolds caught the inbounds pass on the wing near the 3-point line, and threw an alley oop pass to a back-cutting Avery Waddington, who caught the ball in the air and layed it in for a four-point lead.

“It’s not designed to be a lob, and all of a sudden it was,” Anderson said. “I’ll confess, it's not how I drew it up, but they ran a great play.”

Reynolds then sank two free throws to ice the game.

Waddington finished with 17 points, Reynolds 10 for Lake City, which plays Folsom (Calif.) today at 12:30 in a semifinal game.

Anderson said the T-Wolves committed perhaps a half-dozen turnovers in the first quarter in falling behind, then went to a zone to eventually catch up and take the lead.

“KaLiah Frazey set a tone in the second quarter,” Anderson said. “She came in off the bench and got really physical, and got some of the other girls going.”

Claire O’Connor, a 6-foot-1 left-hander who has signed with Gonzaga, led all scorers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers, all in the first half.

“She can post you up, hit it from 25 and in,” Anderson said. “When we were in man, and especially in the fourth quarter, Emberlyn did a good job on her. The zone in general allowed us to keep a mark on her, and slowed them down.”

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — After Kinlee McLean’s 3-pointer fell early in the first quarter, the Trojans got rolling into the championship game of the Gesa Winter Shootout a little later today.

McLean's early 3 sparked the Trojans to a 36-13 halftime lead en route to a win over the host Wildcats in a semifinal game.

“We just came out cold,” Post Falls coach Brian Hall said. “When she hit that, the rest of the team stepped up.”

Post Falls (10-0) will face either Federal Way or Jackson in today’s championship game at 2:30 p.m.

Capri Sims scored 18 points, McLean 14 and Myckenzee Mitley 12 for Post Falls, which has won its two tourney games by a combined 70 points.

“It was probably the best defensive game we’ve played all year,” Hall said. “Mitley, (Letti) Asper and (Kaelynn) Miller were very strong on defense. We limited them to one shot and really controlled the game from there.”

Isabella Clinton had 19 points for Eastmont (2-5).

LAS VEGAS — The Vikings led by two with three minutes left before faltering down the stretch against the Fightin' Tigers of Orlando, Fla., in the second round in the Spalding Bracket at the Jerry Tarkanian Classic at Sierra Vista High.

“They hit some big shots down the stretch, some big 3s,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jon Adams said. “And we made some dumb turnovers and missed some free throws. It was a very winnable game, but we lost it on some mental errors, which we can clean up.”

Steven Burgess scored 15 points, Carter Rupp 13 for Coeur d’Alene (5-2), which fell behind early and trailed by seven points at the half. Alexander Nipp added eight points, Gunner Larson six for the Vikings.

A full box score was unavailable.

“Steven Burgess had a phenomenal game,” Adams said. “At the end they just took him away, followed him everywhere, wouldn't let him get the ball in the backcourt.”

Coeur d’Alene plays Monterrey Trail of Spalding, Calif., today at noon at Bishop Gorman High.
