PREP ROUNDUP: Mitley fuels Post Falls win over Mt. Spokane

MEAD — Her team playing shorthanded due to injuries and sickness, Post Falls sophomore Myckenzee Mitley stepped up when the unbeaten Trojans needed her the most.

Mitley hit two 3-pointers, scoring 10 of her game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Trojans held off the Mt. Spokane Wildcats 52-48 on Tuesday night.

“It was a great night for her,” said Post Falls coach Brian Hall of Mitley. “She’s been great all year, but really stepped it up with three players out and only four scoring.”

Post Falls made 8 of 12 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, compared to Mt. Spokane, which went 2 for 2.

“It was a tight game,” Hall said. “We needed every point that we got tonight.”

Senior Capri Sims scored 17 points for Post Falls (8-0), which faces Wenatchee in the opening round of the Gesa Winter Shootout in East Wenatchee on Monday at 6 p.m.

Destiny Kamalu-Vargas scored 13 points for Mt. Spokane (3-1).

RATHDRUM — Senior Scotty Hocking scored 14 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter, hitting 6 for 6 from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes as the Hawks beat the Spartans in a nonleague game at Hawk Court.

“He’s been solid and a good offensive player for us,” Lakeland coach Tony Hanna said. “He’s the one returning player with any experience and has had to step up this year.”

Senior Nick Nowell had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Lakeland (1-4), which trailed 36-31 at halftime as Tyler Engelson scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half.

“I was really frustrated with how we played in the first half,” Hanna said. “We talked about covering Tyler, and he shot the ball really well in the first half. We did a better job in the second half of containing him and making their shots tougher. Our energy was a lot better in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter to put some pressure on them and turn the ball over.”

Lakeland travels to Moscow on Friday.

Priest River (2-3) hosts the Priest River Christmas Tournament starting Friday.

“We had a 14-point lead, and we ran out of gas,” Timberlake coach Mike LaFountaine said. “I was proud of the way we came out in the first half. Raj had a good game, and Hunter Higgins did a good job creating shots for Wyatt MacArthur. We’re making Timberlake basketball exciting.”

Ayson McLuskie added 12 points off the bench for the Tigers, who play host to Genesis Prep on Thursday.
