Cd'A invocation lottery now open

| August 27, 2022 1:00 AM

Registration to be considered in the lottery to provide invocations at Coeur d'Alene City Council meetings is now open.

The council decided Aug. 16 to allow nonprofit, faith-based organizations within city limits to participate in a lottery that will determine who will give the invocations at the council's 24 meetings.

Registration for the lottery will be through Sept. 22. Dates will be assigned at the time of the lottery. The first meeting to be assigned will be Oct. 4.

To register for the lottery, visit www.cdaid.org/invocation.

Registrants are asked to "affirm/swear to the following":

  • An invocation should be no more than 3 minutes long.
  • Invocations may contain sectarian language — in other words, the prayer can be specific to a religion, faith, person, etc.
  • An invocation should not seek to proselytize (convert) anyone nor seek their confirmation.
  • An invocation should not disparage other faiths.
  • An invocation should not threaten those with different beliefs with hell, damnation, or other punishment.
  • An invocation should not be politically biased.
  • The invocation will not be edited or approved by the City.
  • Invocations should be solemn and respectful in tone.
  • An invocation should address universal values such as peace, wisdom, and justice, but is not limited to those topics.
