PREP ROUNDUP: Carrol shines for Lake City in IEL sweep of Post Falls
• BASEBALL
COEUR d’ALENE — Calvin Carrol drove in two runs — six in total on the day — and Cam Martindale, who struck out five on the mound, helped his cause by scoring on passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning as Lake City held off visiting Post Falls 6-5 in the opening game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader at Lake City High on Wednesday.
“Calvin had some really good approaches at the plate today, was seeing the ball really well and has been gradually getting better and better this season,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “He’s been doing a good job of letting the ball travel and using the entire field.”
In the nightcap, Carrol drove in four runs as the Timberwolves swept the Trojans with a 12-2 win.
“Post Falls is a good team with some great players,” Manzardo said. “I’m proud of how our kids battled back. We had some good approaches at the plate and did a great job against a great team.”
In the opener, Post Falls had the tying run on third base with two outs, but Timberwolves reliever Nate Weatherhead closed out the game with a strikeout.
Joe DuCoeur had three hits and three RBIs in the second game for Lake City (8-7, 8-4 IEL).
Post Falls (9-9, 7-7) hosts Lewiston in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
“We started out well, but we need to stay consistent throughout the game,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “We’d have one good inning, then kind of check out. We just need to find a way to stay engaged throughout the entire game.”
