Sandpoint 0-0

LEWISTON — The visiting Bulldogs managed just one hit and were shut out in both games of an Inland Empire League doubleheader vs. Lewiston at Airport Park.

“We weren’t sharp today,” Sandpoint coach Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams said. “We weren’t communicating well and that allowed a lot of runs to score.”

Jenna Barney pitched a no-hitter for the Bengals in five innings of work. She struck out six and walked two.

“Our bats weren’t there today,” Hawkins-Williams said. “We didn’t hit or play defense well.”

The Bulldogs’ outfield had struggled in the opener, but after the coaching staff met with the players, they performed in the second game. Aspen Schwenk, Jaidyn Inman, and Bella Crum were “exciting to watch,” according to Hawkins-Williams.

“They caught almost every ball that was hit to them,” she said. “They went out there and covered out the entire field.”

Kaitlin Banks pitched a one-hitter and fanned 12 for Lewiston.

Mayle Ducken was the lone hit for the Bulldogs throughout the doubleheader.

KELLOGG — Tapanga Rojas homered in the first game and drove in eight runs on the day, and the visiting Tigers went yard six times in the Intermountain League sweep of the Wildcats at Kellogg Middle School.

Rojas hit a three-run homer in the second inning of the opener, and finished 4 for 5 with five RBIs and three runs scored for league-leading Timberlake (14-2, 8-0 IML). In the second game, she went 2 for 6 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Ashley Grantham homered in each game for the Tigers. She had a three-run shot in the first game, and a two-run homer in the second game. Grantham finished 5 for 7 with seven RBIs and six runs scored on the day.

Lily Carhart hit a three-run homer in the first game for Timberlake, and finished with three hits and seven RBIs on the day.

Logan Walsh hit a three-run homer in the second game for the Tigers, and finished 6 for 6 with four RBIs and nine runs scored.

"I can't complain about our hitting," Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said.

Casey Whaley struck out seven and scattered three hits in five innings in the opener for Timberlake, and Acacia Pecor fanned 12 and gave up four hits in five innings in the nightcap.

Walsh, a part-time catcher last season, has moved back behind the plate from third base after catcher Taylor Bentley suffered a bone bruise on her left ankle after getting hit by a pitch a week ago. Lupinacci is optimistic Bentley will be back in the lineup in a week or so.

Kadyn Williams had two hits on the day for Kellogg (4-12, 4-4), which is in second place in the four-team IML.

Priest River 24-18

Bonners Ferry 18-8

PRIEST RIVER — The Priest River softball team was able to combat its 14 errors with a season-high 20 hits in game one of its Intermountain League sweep of visiting Bonners Ferry.

“The errors didn’t hurt us as much as they had earlier in the season,” Priest River coach Ron Kruse said. “We were hitting the ball all day long, even at the bottom of the order.”

Lilly Freitas had her best showing of the season by going 10 for 11 at the plate with three doubles and two triples.

“This was the best game of her career,” Kruse said. “She hit the heck out of the ball.”

Freitas also took control in the circle in the doubleheader.

In the opener she came in during the fifth inning and gave up two runs on no hits and struck out four.

She got the start during the nightcap allowing four runs on four hits and striking out eight.

Kruse also highlighted the baserunning for Priest River. During the Spartans’ 21-20 loss to Troy on Thursday, the Trojans caught them on a triple play.

This made baserunning a point of emphasis for Saturday’s games.

“We had a lot of baserunning mistakes (against Troy),” Kruse said. “That’s all we worked on leading up to today and that helped a lot.”

Priest River (3-13, 3-5 IML) plays a doubleheader at IML-leading Timberlake on Tuesday.
