MESSAGES: Question the intent

| April 22, 2022 1:00 AM

In 1949, the Broadway musical South Pacific premiered and was an immediate success. It included the song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” which was about feelings toward those of a different race or ethnic group.

The gist of the song is that racism is not born in you, it happens after you are born. You are taught to hate those who the people around you hate in a never-ending cycle.

I see writings in the paper that celebrate some while denigrating others. It is interesting that any faults of the celebrated group are glossed over while those who are different are demonized. The approach uses caricatures for its comparisons and does provide a realistic representation for anyone’s consideration. That may not be the point of the writings.

A truthful representation of any group would be complex and difficult to present in a few words. It would also necessitate examination and acceptance of one’s own biases. Maintaining civility while expressing one’s views might be an easier goal.

“By their fruit you will know them” is an adage that should be familiar to many. What is the “fruit” that the authors of these messages desire? There is enough strife and suffering in this world that more does not need to be created. If only as much energy and passion could be put into learning to live together as seems to be put into trying to tear us apart.
