SPIRIT LAKE — Taylor Bentley’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning snapped a 2-all tie, and Logan Walsh followed with a three-run home run as the Timberlake Tigers beat the St. Maries Lumberjacks 7-4 in a nonleague softball game Thursday.

In a matchup of two of the top teams in the state in their respective classifications, 3A Timberlake (7-2) managed seven hits off 2A St. Maries ace Taci Watkins, who struck out 19 in a one-hitter against Timberlake last week in a 3-0 St. Maries win.

“Taci’s a heckuva pitcher,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We finally made some adjustments; the girls figured it out, and put the bat on the ball.”

Watkins struck out 12 on Thursday for St. Maries (8-2). She also went 3 for 4, and her RBI single in the third inning increased St. Maries’ lead to 2-0.

Casey Whaley struck out 13 for Timberlake, and “got stronger as the game went on,” Lupinacci said.

Alycia Cameron went 2 for 3 and scored three runs for the Tigers. She scored on Jesi Kitchin’s single in the fifth to tie the game at 2.

Addyson Stewart had two hits for the 2A Lumberjacks, whose only losses have come to 3A Timberlake and 4A Lakeland.

Berkli McGreal singled in a run in the top of the seventh and later scored for St. Maries, which had the tying run in the on-deck circle before Whaley finished it with a strikeout.

On Saturday, St. Maries is scheduled to play host to Grangeville in a Central Idaho League doubleheader, and Timberlake visits Priest River in an Intermountain League twinbill.

SPIRIT LAKE — The host Tigers managed just one hit off the Lumberjacks’ Wyatt Holmes, but pieced together five runs to capture the nonleague baseball game.

Timberlake (6-2) scored on an error, a steal of home, a groundout, an error and a hit batsman.

“We had baserunners all night, it felt like,” Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. “We hit the ball really hard — just right at people. We were aggressive on the basepaths, we played small ball, and found a way to scratch out runs.”

Kenny Wells had Timberlake’s lone hit, a leadoff single in the third inning. He also scored two runs.

Johnson also had praise for sophomore Grant Allaway, who scattered four hits in his first varsity appearance.

Shaun Hunter tripled and scored for St. Maries in the top of the seventh. The Lumberjacks brought the tying run to the plate, but Allaway induced a groundout to end it.

Trace Wicks went 2 for 3 and scored two runs for St. Maries (1-7), which plays host to Grangeville on Saturday in a Central Idaho League doubleheader.
