See students dazzle
North Idaho College student art exhibit is open at the Corner Gallery for viewing through May 13.
The show features a variety of original works of fine art created by NIC students, adjudicated by Aaron Johnson.
Pam Ness, a non-traditional student, said she can’t say enough wonderful things about the art program and professors at NIC.
“All of the professors are very supportive and encouraging to all of the students,” Ness said. “It always is amazing to me that there can be 16 students in a class, we all receive the same assignment and yet the outcomes and results are just remarkably different.”
Ness said her educational and professional background was in business, but she was always interested in art and started taking classes at the college about five years ago.
“It has changed the way I look at the world,” Ness said.
Ness said she enjoys learning through the classes, taking everything from art history, printmaking, watercolor, oil painting, drawing, two dimensional and three dimensional design classes and photography.
“I think one of the most enjoyable aspects is being around all of these very talented and creative young students,” Ness said. “I am definitely the age of most of their grandmothers.”
The student art exhibit is the first time Ness has ever entered a piece of work in a show, submitting an oil painting on canvas she completed in an advanced oil painting class.
“This type of venue and exposure of art and the maker of the art pieces is very valuable, especially for the young students,” Ness said. “They are all building their resumes and portfolios. Many of them are going on for further education to become educators and to pursue various other endeavors in the art field.”
Ness’s art along with the other student art can be viewed in the Corner Gallery from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fridays. Admission is free.
Best in Show for the exhibit went to Moriah Godwin for her piece, “At a Loss for Words.” Zoe Potter received first place for “Untitled,” Alec Smith received second place for “Tea Pots,” Tessa Moreno received third place for “Woodlands,” and honorable mentions went to Lauren Bokman for “Magenta Special” and Bob Perry for “Hindsight is 20/20.”
