Cold wave setting shiver records
COEUR d'ALENE — The April cold wave continued Thursday with a high of just 38 degrees in Coeur d'Alene. That set a record-low high for April 14 that topped the old mark of 41 for that date set in 1917.
Wednesday's 23 degrees tied the record low for April 13, also set in 1917.
April 11 saw a record-low high of 37 degrees.
"This is really cold weather," said climatologist Cliff Harris. "And it looks like we've got some snow coming."
Temperatures the past week have seen highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s, catching many by surprise after they'd already planted flowers and connected hoses.
"This is more like February," Harris said. "A week of February weather in April."
It snowed Thursday night and more could fall tonight or Saturday.
Harris said this is the longest April cold wave, going on seven days, dating back to 1895.
He expects cold conditions to continue for another three days before things return a bit more to normal next week with highs in the 50s.
