PREP ROUNDUP: Golfers scramble to play following overnight snow

PINEHURST — Golfers from nine schools showed up at Pinehurst Golf Course for the Mullan Invitational only to find a couple inches of overnight snow on parts of the nine-hole course.

Course personnel and volunteers were able to get six of the nine holes ready for play, and the golfers played two six-hole loops.

The tourney usually consists of a combination of best-ball and two-man scramble, but officials adjusted and Monday’s format was mostly two-person scramble, with some three-person scramble teams.

Seth Swallows and Landon Warren of St. Maries won with a 7-under-par 40.

Four of the nine schools had enough players to form at least four two-person scramble teams, and the best four scores from each team were added together to form the team score.

St. Maries won with a 188.

“It was brutally cold up here,” Mullan coach Paul Elston said. “Our grounds crew and volunteers did an incredible job getting six holes ready. The kids were mentally tough today, and there were some pretty good scores, too.”
