PREP SOFTBALL: Schmidt, Burke lead Coeur d'Alene to sweep of Lakeland

COEUR d’ALENE — Kristine Schmidt pitched a four-inning no-hitter in the opener and Skylar Burke drove in nine runs in the nightcap for the Coeur d’Alene Vikings, who swept the Lakeland Hawks 16-1 and 17-7 in Inland Empire League play Saturday at Larry Schwenke Field.

Schmidt struck out five, walked four and hit one in the first game for Coeur d’Alene (6-1,3-1 IEL). She also went 3 for 3 with a two-run triple in the first, finishing with three RBIs.

Catherine Bakken went 3 for 4 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Vikings. Matea Dorame also doubled and tripled, drove in two runs and scored four.

In the second game, Burke went 4 for 5 with three doubles and scored three runs for Coeur d’Alene. She hit a three-run double in the second inning to put the Vikings ahead for good, 5-3. She added an RBI single in the third, a two-run double in the fourth and a two-run double in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Dorame and Delaney Gosch each went 3 for 4 with two RBIs in the second game for Coeur d’Alene.

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday in an IEL doubleheader.

Lakeland (3-5, 0-2) returns to action Thursday at Moscow in an IEL twinbill.

LEWISTON — The visiting Trojans fell out of the IEL lead, and the Bengals moved into first place with the sweep at Airport Park.

Kaitlin Banks struck out nine and scattered four hits in the opener for Lewiston (7-2, 4-0 IEL).

Jenna Barney allowed just one hit — a one-out double by McKenna Moak in the fourth inning — in the second game for the Bengals.

Taryn Barney of Lewiston went 7 for 8 on the day with three doubles, a triple and five RBIs.

Post Falls (7-3, 4-2) travels to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday for an IEL doubleheader.

COEUR d’ALENE — Hanah Stoddard doubled and drove in three runs and Hope Bodak homered in the second game, helping the host Timberwolves earn a split with the Bears in IEL play.

Kylee Palmer struck out six and scattered five hits in the second game for Lake City (1-6, 1-3 IEL). Bodak’s homer was a solo shot in the fourth inning. She finished 2 for 3 with four runs scored.

In the first game, Layla Gugino hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for Lake City. Taylor Hill was 3 for 5 with a two-run single and two runs scored. Karah Clevenger was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs.

Addie Branen drove in four runs in the opener for Moscow (3-7-1, 1-5).

Lake City plays host to Sandpoint on Tuesday in an IEL doubleheader.

OROFINO — Taci Watkins pitched a no-hitter for the second time in three days to help the visiting Lumberjacks finish off a sweep of the Maniacs in the Central Idaho League opener for both teams.

Watkins struck out 28 in the two games, including 12 in the nightcap for St. Maries (7-1). She walked two in the second game after walking none in the opener.

Watkins also went 4 for 8 at the plate.

Stacie Mitchell hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning of the opener for the Lumberjacks, and went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap.

Orofino is 8-5.

St. Maries plays host to Potlatch on Tuesday.
