PREP ROUNDUP: Wind quite the challenge at Timberlake meet

SPIRIT LAKE — The real challenge wasn’t planned at Timberlake High.

But that’s spring sports in North Idaho for you.

As winds howled throughout Friday afternoon, it played some tricks on pole vaulters during the sixth edition of the Kootenai County Challenge at Timberlake High.

“I just moved my step back a bit and when I was putting more speed on it and had some adrenaline going through my body, I was actually on my mark,” said Coeur d’Alene junior James Bogdanowicz, who won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet. “I was exactly where I wanted to be instead of forward or backwards because of the wind.”

While the rain held off, the wind did not, with gusts of 35 to 40 miles an hour blowing into the area from the south.

“You can never really guess the weather,” Bogdanowicz said. “The wind is probably one of the biggest things that hurts in the pole vault because it can push you sideways, forward, backward, really any way you can think of. It’s always something that you’ve got to change and learn on the fly. I was told by the Lake City coach (vault coach Russ Blank) that whoever could adapt is going to win this meet.”

As for facing Timberlake, a 3A school Coeur d'Alene doesn't often see as a 5A school ...

“I love it,” Bogdanowicz said. “I love the competition and going against them. They’re a great school, and they’ve got some good competitors. It’s good to have some good competition.”

Post Falls junior Trevor Miller won in the shot put and discus for the Trojans, who won the boys team title for the second straight year with 99 points. Senior Dalton Wild had wins in the 100, 4x200 relay and 4x400 relay. Wild won the 100 in 11.01 seconds, breaking the school record held by Tony Nagle 1985 (11.04).

“Overall, given everything and the weather, I thought our kids performed well,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “There were some good marks and we were able to get through it healthy.”

Coeur d’Alene edged Post Falls for the girls team title, the Vikings' first girls title at the Challenge since winning in back-to-back years in 2017 and 2018.

SPIRIT LAKE — The host Tigers committed 11 errors — seven in a 10-run fifth inning — in the nonleague loss to the Stags.

“We need to figure it out defensively,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “If we make an error, we can’t continue to compound it with another error.”

Logan Walsh went 3 for 4 for Timberlake (4-2), and her two-run homer in the fourth inning cut Deer Park’s lead to 8-6. Acacia Pecor finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers, who outhit the Stags 11-8.

Delaney Newman was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Deer Park (4-2).

Timberlake returns to action Wednesday at home vs. Kellogg in a doubleheader to open Intermountain League play.
