MOB: In eye of beholder

| September 29, 2021 1:00 AM

The front page of the Sept. 25 Coeur d’Alene Press included a photograph captioned “MOB SCENE.” Was that a poor choice of words, or was that misrepresentation of the activity?

By definition, a mob is an unruly and often violent group of people, especially one engaged in a riot or other lawless violence. That doesn’t represent the activity in the photograph. A public demonstration expressing views on a significant issue is not a mob.

The Coeur d’Alene School Board as an elected government entity is to serve the community in the public (government) education of their children. We citizens are actually the government — of, by and for the people. When citizens believe their elected representatives, in any area, are not representing them they have every right and a responsibility to express their concerns. If elected officials are not listening, then a strong, yet respectful, firm voice may be needed; it’s essential that Americans to stand up for what is right versus wrong, good versus evil, and truths versus falsehoods. The sole purpose of our government is to protect our unalienable (God given) rights as expressed through the Constitution, not to exercise assertive control over us.

COVID-19 decisions must be based on truths and the facts, not opinions. Everyone has an opinion, so whose opinion is right and whose is wrong? As for masks, do they really protect against COVID-19? I suggest the school board and we citizens do due diligence, get the facts from valid studies, then work together to decide issues.

As for the “Press” and “MOB SCENE” caption, an editorial apology to the citizens exercising their rights is in order.
