COVID: Math on pediatrics

| September 29, 2021 1:00 AM

When I first read the article about Vanessa Carroll’s presentation to the Coeur d’Alene Rotary, I tried to research and check the math for myself. At that time, my research from the CDC website indicated 200 out of 100,000 children (worst case) were hospitalized from COVID-19 — which is 0.2% 10,000 Coeur d’Alene kids X .002= 20 kids that could be hospitalized.

Now that I see her source (AAP), I went to the website and it indicates 7332/100000 rate of COVID-19 cases for this age group, or 7.3%.

Of those .1%-2% are being hospitalized.

10,000 Coeur d’Alene kids x .073=730 possible cases x.02 (Worst case) = 15 kids. 730 cases x.001 = almost 1 child (Best case) that could be hospitalized.

I respect the overall concern but question the math.

The larger point of concern to me is that children represented 25.7% of the reported weekly COVID-19 cases. What an incredible demographic that can spread the disease to adults and others much more vulnerable to the disease.
