Fatigue and weight gain are two of the most often discussed issues related to health. Many come in with pre-conceived ideas of what is contributing, but often it tends to be one or two reasons such as lack of exercise and/or poor diet. But both conditions rarely are the result of just one or two simple things. If that were the case, we wouldn’t have an epidemic of both — obesity and fatigue. Both tend to be complex, and both have common denominators — adrenal and thyroid function issues. While there are many more reasons than just those two (we’ll discuss a few more), these tend to be pivotal in eliminating these conditions.

For some reason, the thyroid tends to get the short end of the stick when it comes to diagnostics. More often than not, the only test done is a blood test: TSH. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is released by the pituitary in response to the amount of thyroxine and triiodothyronine in the bloodstream. If your levels are high, it means the pituitary, is hammering on the thyroid trying to get it to do its job. What it doesn’t tell is if the liver is to blame, or the hypothalamus or the adrenals, or any number of other causative factors. All have roles in thyroid health and all need to be examined if the thyroid doesn’t appear to be working right.

The thyroid is vitally important in both weight loss and fatigue and if they are your challenge, you need health detectives to go to work to figure out why it isn’t working properly (or if it is, but another system isn’t).

The adrenal glands are also vitally important in both weight loss and fatigue. They are often ignored by conventional medicine, viewed as either perfectly functioning, or in failure. They seem unaware that an organ doesn’t just fail. Its function slowly deteriorates, revealing a whole slew of symptoms, until it fails. If you are in that in between area, the area between failure and perfect function, you may be tired, have issues controlling weight, blood sugar, stress, sleep, and thyroid function as well. This potential gray area must be evaluated as part of a comprehensive exam and assessment any time you experience fatigue or stubborn weight loss.

Your nutrition is certainly a major factor in not only weight loss and fatigue, but also thyroid health, adrenal health, and the health of every other organ in the body — no exceptions. When it comes to weight loss in particular, some people are eating well, but not enough. The opposite of what we’ve come to believe. Doing deeper investigative work is really an important key to get you out of struggle mode and give you some real direction. Your life can be full of energy and you can have a happy weight. Come in and figure out the complexities of the contributing factors for you, and you’ll be on your way to a healthier, slimmer, energy filled you.
