SCHEDULES: A student’s protest

| November 5, 2021 1:00 AM

Hello, I’m a current sophomore at Lake City High School. As some people know, our bell schedule is getting changed due to an audit toward Lake City and Coeur d’Alene high schools. What some people don’t know is that some of the options our students are to pick for our new schedule break a contract that our teachers sign.

Some of our new bell schedules also lower opportunities for our students. What I’m trying to present is why should Lake City have to change its schedule? Coeur d’Alene should change its schedule. The audit says that Coeur d’Alene has fewer opportunities than Lake City.

I will say that it is true that yes we have more opportunities than Coeur d’Alene but that doesn’t mean we should pull away opportunities from Lake City. I’ve asked around the school and almost all of us agree that CHS should have their opportunities raised rather than LCHS’s opportunities lowered.

I also stated that most of these new schedules would break out teachers’ contracts they sign before teaching. Somewhere on that contract, it states that all teachers are given five periods each week of prep time for classes, but these schedules would lower it down to 3-4 periods.

The school board is also glossing over that and some of our teachers are livid. So I’ll ask again: Why should we have to change schedules?
