HAYDEN LAKE — Their teams were not in the championship hunt, but the Coeur d’Alene High boys and girls golf teams were delighted to bring home trophies for finishing in the top four at the state 5A golf tournament at Avondale Golf Club which concluded Tuesday.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys, third after the first day, finished third on their home course.

And the Viking girls finished fourth — the first trophy in the history of the girls program.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys shot 658, 36 shots back of state champion Eagle.

“Our team did all right; didn’t play quite to our potential, like we could have, but got the job done … top three,” said Coeur d’Alene junior Parker Freeman, who earned a medal (top-10 finish) in leading the Vikings with a seventh-place finish, shooting 80-77—157. “For my first state (tournament), I just wanted to play the best I could and do the best for our team.”

Coeur d’Alene’s girls shot 782, 23 strokes ahead of the fifth-place finisher, Thunder Ridge of Idaho Falls.

“It’s so exciting, and I’m so excited to have such a great coach to lead us like (Craig) Leaf, because we would not here if it weren’t for him,” Coeur d’Alene senior and No. 1 player Holly Hudson said. “Honestly, he was a big mental impact, preparing us for every tournament, and especially the state tournament, because he knew we had the potential to get a trophy.”

Hudson and Marin Rowley each shot 193 to lead the Vikings.

Rocky Mountain shot 658 to win by four strokes over Boise. It was Rocky’s first girls title since going back-to-back in 2013-14.

Lake City’s girls, led by JoJo Dodge (86-95—181), finished sixth.

Post Falls’ boys, paced by regional champion Dominic Mosby (84-84—168), finished seventh.

Boise senior Emily Cadwell won the girls individual state title, and Eagle freshman Wheaton Ennis captured the boys individual crown.

Cadwell, a Washington State signee and the first-day leader after shooting 4-under-par 69, shot 75 on Tuesday and won by two shots over Brooke Patterson of Eagle, a Tulsa commit who shot a pair of 73s.

“Conditions were a lot more difficult today (cooler than Monday, and just as breezy), so not getting ahead of myself was probably the biggest thing,” said Cadwell, third at state two years ago. “Obviously she (Patterson) is a good player. We compete all the time, so no lead is safe (with her).”

Cadwell started the day with a four-shot lead, but Patterson cut it to two at the turn. Then Cadwell birdied the par-5 10th hole and Patterson bogeyed for a four-shot lead, and Cadwell led by at least two shots the rest of the way.

“From there (10) in, I was just trying to make par on every hole, and not screw up,” Cadwell said.

Ennis shot 73-72—145, 1 over par, for a four-stroke victory over first-round leader Dawson Moon of Highland, who shot 70-79—149.

“It means a lot to come up here and win,” Ennis said. “I’ve been working hard for this, and to get the team win too, it just adds to it.”

Ennis has played in junior golf tournaments all over the country, winning an event in Arizona, as well as the Dropping tourney in the Boise area.

Since there are obviously no leaderboards at these tournaments, folks rely on word of mouth to know who’s ahead during a round. Ennis had heard some talk on the back nine that he might leading, then figured he had it wrapped up when he heard on 17 that Moon had shot 79.

Ennis said Avondale is different from the courses in the Boise area, “but I feel like it suits my game well. It’s tight; the greens are good, and I just feel like it helps me.”

It was Eagle’s first boys title since 2015, the last of six straight state titles.
