OPINIONS: Keep forum open, Press

| March 26, 2021 1:00 AM

Upon reading Cornell Clayton’s op-ed column, I began to consider if the content is to be a justification for The Press to begin refusing to publish letters from locals who have opinions that differ from those of the editor, as Twitter and other social media have done.

The author and the Foley Institute, which he runs, are concerned with the rights of women and the LGBTQ+ movements, both of which are worthy of his support. However, the fact that he is a Distinguished Professor at his University (that means he is held in high esteem by his peers) does not give him any justification to suggest that The Press begin limiting letters that may support ideas that do not conform to those of The Press editor or Mr. Clayton.

If The Press were to take the limiting position as suggested by Mr. Clayton, it would lose much of its credibility on anything it publishes. The English thought the same way about our forefathers’ ideas as Mr. Clayton confers on theories he mentioned. For the people to be free, access to its newspaper needs to be also.

Some well-informed people consider the idea that CO2 is causing the climate to change, believe we should consider the Malenkovitch Factors (elliptical orbit, axis tilt and wobble of the Earth) and the variables on the sun and interstellar energy as the causes. I hope I have not crossed Mr. Clayton’s unacceptable line by suggesting a different idea from that of established “science.”
