Eugene Thomas Hanson, 72

Gene Hanson passed away at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021, following a stay at the Schneidmiller Hospice House in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He fought a gallant effort against brain cancer. Two years ago, they said he had two months to live. Gene outlived their projection.

Gene was born Sept. 18, 1948, in San Diego, Calif. At 18 years old Gene served in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1967. He was boots on the ground, served in battle.

After returning home from Vietnam, Gene worked in the printing industry. At one point he owned a flower shop.

Gene and Beverly met later in life and moved to the Coeur d'Alene area in 2014 and never looked back. Gene loved it here. He loved the Patriotism. He loved how the area treated him as a veteran.

Shortly after moving here, Gene was invited to become part of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Gene joined them. This is remarkable because Gene was really not a joiner. Gene was voted in as Quartermaster of VFW Post 889 here in Coeur d'Alene. He loved that his fellow veterans honored him with that trusted position and he took it seriously. His time serving in the VFW was one of the highlights of Gene's life. He made lifelong friendships with fellow veterans.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Cynthia; Beverly; his sister, Elaine; and brother, Eric.

There will be a service at noon on Friday, July 2, at The Altar, 901 E. Best Ave., Coeur d'Alene, with Pastor Tim Remington presiding, with food being served at The Altar right after. Everyone is invited to celebrate Gene's life.

In lieu of flowers, we know Gene would love donations made to the Coeur d'Alene VFW at 406 N. Fourth St. in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho 83814.

Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements. Please visit Gene’s online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com
