LEGION BASEBALL: Lums respond with shutout

| June 19, 2021 1:15 AM

MEDICAL LAKE — Ryan Schneider pitched a five-inning, two-hit shutout and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen recovered from a sloppy performance the night before by beating the Spokane Cannons 10-0 on Friday at Medical Lake High.

Schneider struck out six and walked two for the Lumbermen (11-4).

“He threw a gem, looked really sharp out there,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said.

The Lums turned a triple play in the fourth inning. With runners at first and second, Lums center fielder Austin Taylor made a shoestring catch of a sinking liner in left-center field. Both runners froze halfway to the next base, unsure if the ball had been caught. Taylor threw to second for the second out, and the Lums threw to first to complete the triple play.

Liam Paddack and Joe DuCoeur each had two hits and two RBIs for Coeur d’Alene.

“One of our better total games of the year,” Darren Taylor said. “Clean pitching, and we hit well.”

The night before, the Lums blew most of a five-run lead before holding on to beat the Shadle Shockers 8-7 in Spokane.

“We had a little bit of a conversation after last night’s game,” Taylor said. “They sure responded.”

Coeur d’Alene plays host to the Yakima Pepsi Beetles on Sunday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Thorco Field.

Northern Lakes wins twice at own tourney

RATHDRUM — Northern Lakes beat the Tri-Cities Badgers 9-1 and the Spokane Expos Blue 7-2 on the first days of the Border Battle tournament at Lakeland High’s Gorton Field.

Louis Powell went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the first game for Northern Lakes (5-3). In the second game, he pitched 4.2 shutout innings, striking out six, walking two and allowing one hit.

“He’s never really pitched before, and we were low on pitching,” Northern Lakes coach Bryce Johnson said of Powell, mainly an infielder at Timberlake High, and at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore. “He has pitched phenomenal.”

Tristan Clift, Powell’s teammate at Blue Mountain, struck out six in four innings in the first game, allowing four hits and one run. In the second game, he was 3 for 4 and scored twice.

Clift hasn’t been able to pitch for some 3-4 months because of an arm injury.

“Extremely happy to get Tristan Clift back on the mound,” Johnson said. “He’s been dominant in his two appearances.”

Scott Pote was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Mountaineers against Tri-Cities, and Andrew Horn was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a runs scored vs. the Expos.

“Very, very pleased with the day in general,” Johnson said. “I think it was the cleanest we’ve played all year, against two very quality programs.”

Northern Lakes plays the Everett Legends at 1:15 p.m. and the Spokane Expos Red at 3:45 today, both at Lakeland, to wrap up play in the five-team group at Gorton Field. The top two teams from the Lakeland group, and the top two from the five-team group at Memorial Field in Sandpoint, advance to Sunday’s semifinals at Lakeland.
