LEGION BASEBALL: Lefties rule for Lums in home-opening win

| June 4, 2021 1:10 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Liam Paddack went 3 for 4 with a triple, two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen “AA” team beat the Spokane Cannons 9-3 in Legion baseball Thursday evening at Thorco Field.

The lefty hitting Paddack stroked a two-run double in the third inning to open the scoring for Coeur d’Alene (3-3) in its home opener. He added an RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring triple in the sixth.

“We need him to get going,” Lums coach Darren Taylor said of Paddack, whose at-bats were limited at last weekend’s tournament in Missoula because he couldn’t play first base because of soreness in his left shoulder and, by tournament rules, only the pitcher could be DH’d for.

Ryan Schneider went 3 for 3 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Lums.

Lefty Troy Shepard struck out five and walked one in two hitless innings for Coeur d’Alene. Schneider, another lefty, struck out the side in the third, his lone inning.

“It was the night of the lefties,” Taylor said, “and Schneider also hit well.”

Four Lums pitchers combined to yield just four hits and strike out 10.

Coeur d’Alene travels to Yakima on Saturday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader with the Beetles. The Lums’ next home game, a doubleheader with Lewis-Clark, has been pushed back a day to Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m.
