RATHDRUM — A man accidentally shot himself Monday, according to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded to the Lakeland Immediate Care in Rathdrum about 1:15 p.m. for a male who was transported by private vehicle with a gunshot wound. Deputies arrived on scene and contacted a male who had a single gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, a press release said.

"Deputies quickly learned the incident occurred in the area of 16298 Trails End Road," the release said. "After talking to the victim of the gunshot wound and witnesses at the scene, it is believed the male accidentally shot himself while standing outside the residence talking to another male."

The 41-year-old Rathdrum man was transported to Kootenai Health with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives were called to the scene to assist with the investigation, "but again, it appears the incident was a neglect discharge and no other people or bystanders were injured," the release said.
