LEGION BASEBALL: Lums, Northern Lakes knocked out of wood bat tourney

| July 4, 2021 1:10 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Patrick Rimpau drove in three runs and Jackson Scherr homered leading off the top of the fourth inning for the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen "AA" team, which beat Hodgen Distributing of Pendleton, Ore., 10-1 in a crossover game to conclude play in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic at Thorco Field on Saturday night.

Ryan Schneider struck out seven and allowed two hits for the Lums.

“Ryan threw the ball really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “After that walk and run (in the first inning), he didn’t allow anything and settled down nicely.”

Coeur d’Alene went 1-2 in pod play, losing in its first game on Saturday to the Spokane Expos 16U 11-8. The Expos finished third in the pod. Coeur d'Alene finished fourth. The top two teams in each four-team pod advanced to the quarterfinals. The Eastside Baseball Renegades, which beat Coeur d'Alene, and the Kennewick Outlaws, who lost to the Lums, advanced from the Thorco Field pod.

“The teams in our pod were really good,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “It would have nice to get through and see where we’re at, but we’ll continue to get ourselves ready for the postseason.”

Joe DuCoeur and Marcus Manzardo had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene (18-8), which faces the Glacier Twins of Whitefish in the Whitefish tournament on Thursday at 7 p.m. PDT.

Against the Spokane Expos 16U, DuCoeur had two RBIs and Ryan Schneider scored three runs for Coeur d’Alene.

Gavin Wideman drove in three runs for the Expos.

“We played pretty well, but just got started a little too late,” Taylor said. “With the rules of the tournament, we knew we couldn’t give them more than a run and when they scored twice in the first inning, it kind of took the air out of the balloon for us. We came back hard and should have gotten one more crack at them.”
