Fulcher announces service academy nominations
Congressman Russ Fulcher has announced the candidates nominated for appointment to U.S. service academies.
The first step in a student’s journey to attend a Military Service Academy is to apply for a congressional nomination. Each candidate is eligible for four congressional nominations, and are highly encouraged to seek nominations from all offices to increase the probability of earning a nomination.
The offices eligible to provide nominations are the Office of the Vice President of the United States, the two Idaho U.S. Senate offices, and the Idaho U.S. House of Representatives office. Congressman Fulcher may nominate up to 10 individuals for each vacant academy slot allotted to Idaho's First Congressional District.
Students from Kootenai County who have received Fulcher’s nominations include:
Olivia Hill, Lake City High School, to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.; Michael Schlothauer, Coeur d’Alene High School, to the U.S. Military Academy- West Point, N.Y.; Kobie DeLeonard of Coeur d’Alene High School and Olivia Hill, Lake City High School, to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs; and Michael Schlothauer, Coeur d’Alene High School, to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Applicants who received a nomination are not guaranteed an appointment; it is only the first step in the process. In addition, the prestige of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and responsibility to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.
