PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings get aggressive, pin down Sandpoint

COEUR d’ALENE — On Saturday, Coeur d’Alene wrestling coach Jeff Moffat didn’t feel as if his team was competitive enough on the second day of the River City Duals tournament.

A few days later, the Vikings won 10 of their matches by pinfall — only allowing points on forfeits in a 75-12 dual win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs at Jordan Court on Wednesday.

“A lot of what happened last weekend was not being aggressive and how we competed,” Moffat said. “We told them, win, lose or draw, you’ve got to compete harder. And tonight, they were the aggressor and going out and hunting for pins, which was really good to see. Hopefully we can see it keep going.”

Boston Spear (106 pounds), Dax Larsen (126), Mason Keough (138), Demarco Piazza (145), Nolan Randles (152), Carsen Speelman (160), Gunner Giulio (170), Bear Brunner (182), Angelo Miller (195), Jackson Kohal (285) and Cooper Frank had pins for Coeur d’Alene.

“Carsen’s been filling in and doing a good job,” Moffat said. “He just likes to compete and is going to be a good wrestler for us down the road. Dax is a fairly new wrestler, but just keeps getting better and better. As long as we’re continuing to improve, I’m happy with that.”

Coeur d’Alene will compete in the Clearwater Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Vikings will also send a squad to the Van Tuinstra Duals tournament at Timberlake High on Saturday.

The dual was originally scheduled for Dec. 16, but was postponed due to a power outage.
