PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: 3s by Blake, Walton spark Post Falls to win over Lake City

| January 16, 2021 1:18 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Not much separated Post Falls and Lake City on Friday night, until Maya Blake and Kaysha Walton hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Post Falls with 6 minutes left in the game.

Suddenly up by seven points, the Trojans closed out the Timberwolves from the free-throw line for a 57-47 Inland Empire League girls basketball victory at Lake City.

“We came out with a lot of energy; the kids on the bench were talking, and that added to our energy level, and it fueled us defensively,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said.

Blake led Post Falls (8-4, 6-2 IEL) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Capri Sims added 14 points and seven boards, and Hanna Christensen chipped in 11 points.

Brooklyn Rewers led Lake City (7-5, 4-3) with 16 points, and Ashlyn Shanley hit four 3-pointers and added 15 points.

“Our posts (Blake and Sims) did a great job fronting Brooklyn, and our help side was good,” Allert said.

“No question, we’ve got to do a better job moving the ball,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “It’s hard for her (Rewers) to get open if we don’t move the ball and keep the defense moving.”

On Tuesday, Post Falls plays host to Lakeland, and Lake City is home vs. Lewiston.

RATHDRUM — A tough night shooting at home, coupled with strong Bulldog defense left the Hawks on their heels early in an Inland Empire League game at Hawk Court.

Kaylee Banks scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half, Karlie Banks scored seven of her eight in the first quarter, leading the Bulldogs past the Hawks, who were held to 12 first-half points.

“In the first quarter, Sandpoint came out fired up and ready to play,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “And unfortunately, we were kind of on our heels. Sandpoint did a good job of putting pressure on the ball and it pushed us out of our offense. It seemed like everything they threw up in the first quarter went in.”

Freshman Payton Sterling scored 13 points and Katy Ryan had six rebounds for Lakeland (6-6, 4-4 IEL), which travels to Post Falls on Tuesday.

“We got back into it, but just couldn’t turn the corner,” Seymour said. “It was a good win by Sandpoint. They just played a little harder than we did.”

PLUMMER — After playing at Bonners Ferry — a 74-58 setback on Thursday — Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman had a chance to look toward the future, all while staying in the present.

Jolissa Holt scored 18 of her 24 points in the first half for the Knights in a win over the Jaguars in the Scenic Idaho Conference opener for both at Ron Miller Court.

“Jolissa did a good job of getting out and running the floor,” said Dohrman of Holt, who scored 20 points in Thursday’s game. “She’s had two really good games in a row. We had a couple of other ladies ready to step into our rotation and they got some playing time tonight. We were able to work on some things both offensively and defensively. The girls played great tonight.”

Arianna Havier-Gorr scored 15 points for Lakeside (5-6), which travels to Kellogg on Thursday.
