REED: A teacher’s insights

| January 8, 2021 1:00 AM

Mr. Craig Kerwin’s recent polemic against Democrats, and in particular, mocking our mayor, our president-elect, and our own Bruce Reed shows all the symptoms of someone who has swallowed the real “fake news” put out by President Trump and his allies.

Sadly, it displays no real sign of independent thought, only the parroting of the falsehoods and stereotypes that have become the hallmark of the far right and many of the Trump supporters during these past four years.

Mr. Kerwin, for 31 years I taught American Government at CHS, and during those years I had the pleasure and honor of teaching many outstanding, bright and wonderful students. Of them all, Bruce Reed was perhaps the brightest.

Yeah, he really was the smartest kid in the room. You might want to know that he is also a fiscal conservative who was opposed by some in his party because he was not as liberal as they were. If you knew him, you would also know he is a man of principle who has served his country in more ways than you ever will by your negative thinking.

You might also like to know that Idaho ranks 50th in the nation in per pupil spending. Yes, we are dead last in the amount we pay to educate our children. Considering that, being 35th in achievement is doing pretty darn well. I will acknowledge a failure: it seems we haven’t done a very good job of teaching people to think for themselves.
